You’ve heard of Black Friday, and probably even Cyber Monday...but what about Giving Tuesday? It may not immediately ring any bells, but it’s an important trend making a big impact for those who need it most.
The United Nations Foundation helped designate the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as Giving Tuesday. As a response to the shopping frenzy surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a “global day dedicated to giving back.” According to GivingTuesday.org, “charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and give.”
Giving Tuesday (or #givingtuesday if you want to participate in the hashtag on social media channels) is certainly making its mark. In 2014, nonprofits raised nearly $46 million. That’s a whopping 64% increase from 2013 donations. Endorsements from President Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and several other celebrities certainly helped to boost the trend. But millions of posts were from people just like you, donating their hard-earned cash towards a charity that is meaningful to them and posting un-selfies dedicated to loved ones.
Although $46 million may sound like a lot, it’s not much compared to the weekend’s shopping sales. In 2014, consumers spent $52.4 billion between online and in-store shopping on Black Friday. Most of us could definitely practice more charity, and Giving Tuesday is a great way to really show that you care and can benefit you (and others) in more ways than you may think.
Here are five great reasons to participate:
1. Giving provides personal satisfaction.
There’s proof that giving not only makes you happier, you are also a happier person when you give. Studies also found that those who gave gifts to others or donated to charity were happier than those who spent their money on items like bills or even gifts for themselves.
2. It’s tax deductible.
Ask charities for a receipt and you can write off the donation when you fill out next year’s taxes.
3. You can make a real difference.
With modern science and technology, our dollars help eradicate diseases and issues currently facing people worldwide. For example, according to the United National Millennium Development Goals, fewer people live in hunger and suffer from poverty today compared to 1990. While it can feel like progress is slow, we’re making significant strides to increase peacefulness and the spirit of giving as time marches on.
4. A little bit goes a long way.
Sure, $20 could buy you those fuzzy socks or silk pajama pants you’ve been eying. But to a nonprofit like No Kid Hungry, $20 is 200 meals for children who don’t have access to food. With The Life You Can Save's Impact Calculator, you can see exactly what that same $20 bill can do to support the fight against global disease, provide health products and clean drinking water, and even support mental health.
5. There are many who desperately need your help.
While we spend the holiday season stressed about which gifts to buy our loved ones, there are many families stressing about how to provide adequate food and health care for their little ones, let alone presents. No matter how you decide to donate for #GivingTuesday, it will make the world a little bit better for someone who is struggling.
Giving Tuesday might seem like just another social media trend, but it’s making a positive impact. After a long weekend of trying to snag the best deals, shopping nonstop, and cutting in line for doorbusters, it’s certainly refreshing to have a day set aside for what truly matters this season: helping those who need it most.
