In 1987, March was officially designated Women’s History Month—a time to focus on celebrating all the amazing women who have played a vital role in shaping American history.

While we commemorate the women of our past, we also want to commend the women who are making history right now with their life-changing contributions to humanity.

Here are our picks for 8 creative women who are doing all they can day in and day out to make the world a better place:

Robynne Chutkan

Who is she?
Robynne Chutkan MD, FASGE, is an integrative gastroenterologist and bestselling author of Gutbliss, The Microbiome Solution, and The Bloat Cure. With a B.S. from Yale University and an M.D. from Columbia, Dr, Chutkan is on faculty at Georgetown University Hospital and is the founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness. How she inspires us
Melinda Gates generously gives her time, money, and resources to one amazing cause after another. She believes that empowering women and girls can transform their lives and that the way out of poverty is ensuring that each generation has access to quality healthcare and education.

In 2016, Melinda dedicated herself to working on solving the issue of a lack of women in technology and she is also committed to advocating for the importance of choice, health, and rights for women all over the world.

Glennon Doyle Melton

Who is she?
Glennon Doyle Melton is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir (and Oprah’s Book Club pick) Love Warrior, as well as the New York Times bestseller Carry On, Warrior. Glennon is also the founder of online community Momastery, and the creator and president of Together Rising, a non-profit organization that raises millions of dollars for families around the world. Sheryl Kara Sandberg is powerful, educated, and eloquent, and not afraid to demand equality and respect in a man’s world. She is also a brilliant investor and has a gift for helping businesses incorporate family and philanthropy into their business practices.

In addition to her stance on work/life balance and working hard at Facebook to create family friendly work policies, she too is committed to closing the gender gap within the tech and political world.

Robin Lim

Who is she?
Robin Lim is an internationally-known midwife, winner of the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year award, and founder of the Bumi Sehat Foundation International, an Indonesian organization dedicated to providing healthcare and education to underserved populations.

How she inspires us
Robin’s foundation runs two community clinics that provided more than 50,000 free health services and 600 births for the local population last year alone, with the goals of improving health and combating Indonesia’s high infant and maternal mortality rates.

Robin is a passionate advocate of quality prenatal and postnatal care and gentle birthing as a means of facilitating the bond between parent and child and advocating for humanity and consciousness.

Christy Turlington

Who is she?
Christy Turlington is an advocate, mother, supermodel, and founder and CEO of Every Mother Counts (EMC), a maternal health organization. Named Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year in 2013 and one of the TIME 100 Most Influential People in 2014, Christy has worked with several public health organizations, including the Harvard Medical School Global Health Council and the Harvard School of Public Health Board of Dean’s Advisors.

How she inspires us
Through Every Mother Counts, Christy is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for moms all over the world by providing grants to organizations committed to preventing maternal deaths. EMC funds programs that address one of three barriers to quality health care: transportation, training and education, and supplies.

Since 2012, Every Mother Counts has provided $2.97 million in grants and impacted more than 400,000 lives. In 2015 alone, EMC invested $1.2 million in eight countries to give women access to adequate maternal care.

Kate T. Parker

Who is she?
Kate T. Parker is a mom, wife, soccer coach, athlete, and professional photographer who works on both fine art and commercial projects with clients all across America, including brands like Kellogg’s, Oxygen, and Athleta. Her new book, Strong is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves, features confident girls and young women all over the country being their athletic, messy, silly, adventurous selves.

How she inspires us
Kate has set out to show girls that they don’t need to be perfect or look and act a certain way to be accepted and loved. Through her photography, she is leading the movement that “strong is the new pretty” and empowering girls everywhere to move beyond typical stereotypes, and to be confident in being themselves, whatever that means.

Kate has also partnered with organizations that work to boost girls’ confidence (like The Bully Project and Girls on the Run) by providing donations and photography campaigns.
