Q&A with Jamie Morea, Co-founder of Hyperbiotics

Q&A with Jamie Morea, Co-founder of Hyperbiotics
Jamie Morea became a gut health enthusiast after recovering from a personal health scare. She is the Co-founder of Hyperbiotics, and she works to empower individuals on their journey toward greater health.

In this interview, we spoke with Jamie about the inception of Hyperbiotics, living a gut-healthy life, and the future and power of probiotics.

Why did you start Hyperbiotics?

Several years ago, my husband and I were traveling around the world, working remotely, discovering other cultures, and exploring beautiful landscapes from the Balinese rice fields to Costa Rican rainforests—and much more in between. We were truly living our dream.

Then our dream turned into a nightmare.

While traveling from Guatemala to Thailand, I became very nauseous, with a bloated, swollen stomach, extreme weakness, and incapacitating brain fog. After six months in bed and more visits with doctors and specialists than I could count, I finally learned that I had contracted Entamoeba histolytica, an intestinal parasite most common in developing countries.

It would be a drastic understatement to say that it was a dark time for me. I honestly didn’t know if I would recover and be able to enjoy the level of health I had once known, but I searched for answers with everything I had.

As I fought back and slowly recovered, I gained knowledge, compassion, empathy, and understanding. Most of all, though, I gained a sense of purpose to help other people maintain the health I had so very nearly lost.

Along the way, I also began to uncover the revolutionary information that was surfacing on the critical role our microbes play in keeping us healthy. I devoured books and scientific journals, fascinated at the medical paradigm shift that is occurring before our eyes. I began to learn that everything—from our processed food diets, stress, and antibacterial products to antibiotics both as medicine and in our food supply—can leave us extremely depleted in one of the most crucial aspects of health: probiotics.

Armed with this newfound understanding, I wanted to teach others about this vital ecosystem of beneficial bacteria living in each and every one of us. I firmly believe that bacteria is both the foundation of health and the future of medicine and this belief sparked my quest to develop high quality probiotic formulas.

What about probiotics excites you?

Victor Hugo famously said, “All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”

It is my belief that the importance of microbial health is an idea whose time has finally come. Some predict the antibiotic era—going strong for nearly a century—is coming to a close now that we are beginning to experience the repercussions of antibiotic overuse and misuse. The more we study and learn about the human microbiome, the more we understand that the future of medicine is less about killing bacteria with antibiotics, and more about nurturing our gut and supporting our health with probiotics.

At Hyperbiotics, we are confident that this emerging research has us on the cusp of greater health and vitality. We already know that friendly flora are involved in every aspect of our health and well-being—our sleep, memory, emotional state, immune function, digestion, nutrient absorption, hormones, and metabolism—and we’re learning more every day.

We’re also learning that the way forward is backward—that we need to undo many of our modern lifestyle habits—and that the future of medicine is tending to our microbial garden.

How have probiotics changed your life?

Understanding the power of probiotics has given me a different worldview for myself and my family. Now, we make choices based on living in harmony with our microbes, from the food we eat to the cleaning supplies and toiletries we use. We have learned the valuable lesson that we are responsible for our health and that living a healthy life is actually quite simple and intuitive.

We make empowered decisions every day by seeking natural alternatives whenever possible, and by choosing medical interventions as a last resort.

What advice do you have for those wanting to live a gut-healthy life?

As a culture, over the last 50 years or so we’ve been swept away from what is natural. We went from real food grown and cooked at home and walking regularly or working the land to sedentary lifestyles and TV dinners, fast food, high-fructose corn syrup, genetically modified foods, and antibiotic-, emulsifier- and pesticide-laden everything.

We need to return to simplicity and natural living if we want to support our microbial friends so they can support us back.

Which Hyperbiotics initiative are you the most passionate about?

I am most passionate about educating and empowering moms to make the best microbial choices for their babies and children. The impact this could have on future generations is staggering, and I’d love to see gut and microbial health become an integral part of prenatal and postnatal care for moms and babies.

What would you like people to know about Hyperbiotics?

Hyperbiotics is made up of an exceptional team of knowledgeable and kind individuals who really are dedicated to helping and supporting others on their journey toward optimal health.

When you contact us via email, phone, or social media, you will feel our passion and commitment for helping our customers live their healthiest days. I feel so fortunate to work with such inspiring people on a daily basis. We really do care, and we really want to make a positive impact in the world.

Where do you see Hyperbiotics 10 years from now?

In ten years, I envision Hyperbiotics to be on the leading edge of proactive health maintenance. Once the importance of the microbiome is widely accepted and understood (post-paradigm shift, if you will), we’ll likely be able to offer more personalized probiotic formulas to address specific genetic makeups, applications, and goals. Hopefully, by then we will have the ability to identify and commercially produce even more health-supporting probiotic strains.
