Why I Am Reaching For Feelings Instead of Goals This Year
It’s fair to say the past year has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for many of us. If you’re anything like me, your first impulse is to clear the decks by thinking of all the amazing things that you’ll achieve in 2017.
While the new year is the perfect time for setting goals with hope and optimism, we all know it can also be overwhelming to channel the willpower needed to reach them.
Rather than making yet another commitment to pushing myself to be better, stronger, healthier, etc., this year I’ve decided that a change in perspective as I consider who I am, why I am here, and how I want to feel each day is the best path forward as I seek to ensure my life is congruent with my soul.
Because really, when it comes down to it, all of the goals we have and things we want to accomplish are because of the feelings we think they will bring us. So, why not accomplish the feeling first?
For example, if you want to lose weight, it’s likely because you want to feel attractive or healthy. What if you focused your thoughts each day on appreciating every beautiful and wondrous thing about your body—from how it looks to how it functions? You may find yourself losing weight as a by-product because you’re valuing your physical apparatus so much that you make empowered and aligned choices on how to nourish and treat it.
So, I sat down with a pen and paper and started to write. How do I want to feel each day...and it started to flow:
The list went on, and I could feel the tension I’d unknowingly been holding dissipate. And then, a funny thing happened: I was traveling with my family, and I lost my phone. Suddenly, I was the most present, connected, playful, and free I had been in months. So much so that I took it a step further and decided that I’m not even going to replace my phone (gasp!).
You see, being on my phone less is a New Year’s resolution I could have never kept...but by focusing on my feelings, one thing led to another and now I am living exactly how I want to live in that regard.
Needless to say, I’m realizing that a certain magic happens when I put first things first, take responsibility as the creator of my reality, and work from the inside out.
Whether you’ve gotten a running start to the new year or are just now finding your footing, I hope to encourage you when I say that you have never been more powerful than you are right now. Instead of trying to accomplish your goals with effort and sheer might, try to focus first on identifying and accomplishing the feeling you’re seeking...then hold on tight as the adventure ensues.
